short hiatus

August 23, 2010 · |Miscellanous|

pay no attention to the man behind the curtain!

i am taking a short break to wizard up some new and improved rogue magnolia endeavors. i will be re-launching my website here shortly, reformatting my blog (and updating the look), and re-launching my online shop. this is going to take quite a bit of preparation…and so, instead of giving you weird, awkward piecemeal blog posts because i’m too busy building my new webstuffs (ahem, like i have been for the last couple of months, oops)-i’m going to take a short hiatus.

but the next time i rear my little head, it will hopefully be with lots of great things to share with you.

and because a blog post is just weird (to me) without a picture, here’s a pic that the lovely lady behind inkwell calligraphy snapped of me taking pics at my earth day fashion show.

Living the Dream | R.I.P.

July 22, 2010 · |Miscellanous|

let’s be frank, i’m a sarcastic ass hat. my humor is dryer than betty white’s…well, let’s not go there-but, well, i make a lot of sarcastic remarks. most of them, at my own expense.

one of the things i joke about a lot is my station in life. i like to make jokes about “livin’ the dream.” about the reality of it. about how sometimes, when you do what you love, you make your heart full instead of your pockets.

if you live in columbus, i’m sure that you’ve heard that andyman passed away last weekend. he drowned while on vacation in michigan. as a person deeply petrified of drowning who regularly vacations in michigan (in fact, i leave for vacation up at elk lake tomorrow)…this has really stuck with me. i’ve lost many people close to me over the years, and the reality of what his family must be going through has dug itself into my thoughts and won’t let go.

i only had a couple of interactions with him personally, both of which were pleasant-but i can’t say i really knew the man. but what i do know is that, after living in city after city with no alternative station, i moved to columbus and it was like the heavens parted to rain down glorious radio waves that pulsated into my car and filled my ears with the amazing sound of good music. good music. on the radio.

to those of you who have always had cd101 around, you’re spoiled. all of you. but for people who grew up in bumpkin towns that love pop country music and butt rock, you know what i’m talking about. finding good music was akin to having a part time job. i couldn’t afford the interwebs, and i had to find my music the old fashioned way: spending all my damn money at cd connection, crossing my fingers and hoping shit was actually good. a lot of the time it wasn’t.

from what i understand, he truly was the backbone of cd101. he was living the dream. doing something he loved: working for an independent station in a world of vomit-inducing clone radio. what an amazing thing to do with your life: bring people real music for the sake of the listeners and the artists.

you can make donations to his family here. if you have the spare change, i’d highly recommend donating to the memory of someone who lived the dream and shared it with others.

Stacy & Derek | Short North | Love Set

July 22, 2010 · Love Set, |Photography|

in the last couple of weeks, a few friends here and there commented that they really enjoyed my blog. first of all, i was really appreciative…because i kind of just blah blah blah my way through blog posts, kind of chattering to myself-and i didn’t know anyone was actually paying attention. second, this kind of made me realize that i’ve been neglecting my blog the last few months.

i’m hoping to get back on track this summer. i’m evaluating all my projects, narrowing them down, de-cluttering my life-and hopefully, my blog will prosper from this streamlining of endeavors…and i’ll actually have time to post stuff.

here are a few pics from stacy and derek’s love set. this girl was worried about what to wear to her shoot, are you kidding me? she could wear a potato bag and look great! and derek? hunky, for sure.

our session was cut short as we chased the sunset, but check back in a couple of weeks or so for the second half of their shoot!

Jeni’s Is Quite Splendid

July 17, 2010 · |Miscellanous|, |Photography|

Since we just moved from Olde Worthington to Gahanna, I have been looking for a new location to meet clients. Ideally, something within walking distance would be amazing-but I wouldn’t want clients to have to drive all the way across town if they lived, say, in Dublin. So I started looking for somewhere that #1 I enjoy spending time, #2 is sort of centrally located, and #3 my clients will love.

Well, after a little thought, I’ve decided that Jeni’s is the place. It’s right in the middle of the Short North, so it’s about as central as it gets while still having parking options. It’s major eye candy, so I can’t imagine anyone wouldn’t enjoy spending a few minutes in there. And DAMN, they have some good icecream. I will most definitely be getting some Riesling Poached Pear sorbet EVERY single time I meet up with a client there.

There’s a small chance that I chose Jeni’s so that I have an excuse to eat more ice cream, loooots more ice cream.

mixtape exchange | personal set

May 31, 2010 · Personal Set, |Photography|

i recently took part in an interstate mixtape exchange. being neither a cool kid or a normal one, i rarely get to participate in things of this nature. but i love mixtapes, in fact, that is how i wooed my husband when we lived cities apart.

there were a few loose guidelines for the cd’s: playable in all audio devices, loose theme for the track list, and a couple of weeks to get it in the mail. as usual, i was pressed for time, and so mine was rushed and a day late-but hey, it is what it is, people!

i actually received a cd from the organizer of the event. as mixtapes go, it was an all around winner. presentation, content, punctuality…it was a good track list, but the real treat was the package: he made it. it’s so damn sweet, i feel pretty confident that i will own it for the rest of my life-and i am pretty much the opposite of a hoarder, so that’s saying a lot. it most definitely put mine to shame.

so without further ado, here’s the mix i received–the one i sent out is after the jump.

john & marie | up the lane farm | featured vendor

May 29, 2010 · |Miscellanous|

as i scanned the market, trying to decide which vendor to talk to for my first featured vendor post, i spied the smiling face of john wiley. many of our vendors have a big smile for you when you walk by, but i picked him mainly because he had friendly eyes.

john wiley up the lane farm

i explained who i was and what i was doing, and he enthusiastically began talking with me about his deep love for the olde worthington farmer’s market. it’s the only market that john & marie wiley participate in. it has absolutely made their business. they used to live in town, and they decided to do this: become cattle farmers. their focus was well treated, grass fed cows. and the amazing support from marketgoers has made them a success.

i had one of their cards floating around my house from the winter market. i looked up their website and my jaw just dropped. i expected it to be all business: we have cows. we feed them grass. contact us here. blah. blah. blah. instead, i found this:

Farmers and market customers are mutually reconstructing an innocence, a sense of place, a spirit of season and cycle, which was supposed to have been superseded long ago. This is a mutual exercise, as tender and trusting as a band of actors working together on a play. And it is happening in real life. Children are growing up going to market on Saturday mornings. Suburbs are striving to establish viable markets in the same way they work to have good parks and schools, as part of making their community special.

i shouldn’t have been suprised, really. after all, when i talked to john (marie was busy ringing out customers), he was vivacious and well versed. he told me about their blog that morning. it’s a great blog. they openly give information out to customers, but what i love is that they openly give information out to others trying to do what they are doing: raising grassfed cattle. need to know how to build a fence that will keep 40 cows in (that’s the most they have at one time)? check the blog. want to know how john and marie feel about their farm and their cattle? i’ll tell you, it’s with deep awe and respect for the land, the animals, and the process. but don’t take my word for it, check the blog!

i’ll leave you with another excerpt that i found to be quite true, having lived for years on the outskirts of a small farming town:

Walk in wet clay and you have pounds of it clinging to your boots. Churn wet clay with tractor tires (or with the split hooves of animals weighing half a ton) and you have mud. Lots and lots of mud. Heavy and thick and more than a foot deep. On the six o’clock news, sometimes they show dramatic footage of mud slides, usually in Southern California. Seems like everything is exciting in California, or makes good TV—even their mud. In Central Ohio we don’t have mud slides. Our mud just lies there. It figures you will be along soon enough.

you can find john and marie every saturday, exclusively at the olde worthington’s farmers market. feel free to strike up a conversation about mud or fences or mob grazing…they’ll be happy to talk!

featured patron | anita bowman | olde worthington farmer’s market

May 27, 2010 · |Miscellanous|

i decided it would be fun to start interviewing market vendors to give patrons a little more info on who they are and what they do. and then i thought, “why not interview some patrons as well?” our patrons are just as interesting and colorful :D

as i was scouting the market crowd that saturday, looking for someone who was friendly and camera-ready (hey, we all go the market in our sweatpants sometimes, it’s cool)…i spied her on the sidewalk about 10 feet in front of me. she was wearing a handmade skirt, an adorable green cardigan and purple top combo, with the most adorable saddle shoes. and she was carrying two full bags of stuff. i thought to myself: that’s the one! so as i caught up to her and tapped her on the shoulder, she smiled and agreed to be my first ever featured market patron.

she looked familiar to me, but nothing really clicked. then, once i snapped a picture of her (boy, that was fun on a market-crowded sidewalk!), i got my pencil and notepad out and asked her name. “anita bowman,” she replied. and then something halfway clicked in this decrepit mom-brain of mine. i told her that she looked familiar, and she said that she owned a fabric shop. *click* uh yeah-it clicked big time at that point. i have been to her store a number of times, and i even wrote a blog post about it a while back.

you’ll have to bear with me, as i haven’t done something like this in years-and it became painfully obvious that my journalism skills were a bit rusty about 10 minutes ago when i looked at my notes and realized that it would be the world’s shortest interview :D

name:
anita bowman.

fun fact:
owner, sew to speak shoppe, in clintonville!

how did you find out about the market:
word of mouth, mother in law lives in worthington.

do you have a favorite market vendor?:
love, love, loves speckled hen farms!

how often do you get down to the market?:
about 2 times a month, goes to the clintonville market as well.
